I've Built one Intel SS4200 which was a Fujitsu/Siemens Scaleo Home server...but delivered minus the Hard drives or WHS, but with a operating system on a DOM (Disk on module). Got these on Ebay for $135 shipped each, new (I bought 2).
Loaded it up with 4 - Hitachi 2 terrabyte drives. Had one drive fail on me on day two...returned it, and thankfully the system is running a raid 5 array, so it reconstructed the drive I needed to replace. It was under warranty so took very little time as they were bought locally. THen I think the damn powersupply took a dump as it started periodically rebooting. I did buy two of these...moved the drives and DOM to the other system and it works fine. Will be transferring data for several more days yet. Tomorrow need to contact the vendor and see about getting replacement for the one that failed. Then I can stip the other file server, use those 4 - One terrabyte drives in this other when its replaced. Takes a lot of time as I'm practically saturating my Gigabit eathernet with everything I'm doing right now. Thats kept me totally occupied this week in nearly all of my free time.

My movie collection....
I've been ammassing everything from Roberto Benigni, Toto, and Ciccio E Franco....I can find. (Italian Comedies not availible in the USA or in English), have about 60 or 70 so far) and a lot of other stuff I have for my home entertainment system....I use it as a server for me WD TV Live media player feeding my HD TV. Easier than sorting through hundreds of DVD's or BlueRay disks. ANd actually.....an 8 terrabyte of hard drive space in a raid 5 array in a server is really only 5.1 terrabytes availible storage space. Because of parity for reconstructing any ONE drive of the 4 that fails in the system. ANd yeah...I need more than 5.1 Tb.

Luckily it will be easy to get a replacement. I got an email back pretty fast from the Vendor of those servers. I can't fill out the RMA form link they sent me until tonight as I need the SN of the unit which I did not think to bring to the office today.
I had thought about building them using Windows Home server....but the cost of picking up two liscensed copies was high enough to discourage me from doing that. Considering these already have a operating system with them, that while far more limited....does everything I want it to do. Besides...who wants to take the chance of having it shut down on a future update because it was hacked. I have one server running WHS now....and while it was a PITA to get going...I do like it. Hasn't given me any trouble once it was set up and running. I'm transfreing the data from that one to this new one right now....and clearing off a couple external drives I have. Made some mistakes on that machine that limited its capacity to transfer data via ethernet which prompted this project. And yes, that was the cheapest NAS storage option I found that actually has few people griping about it. And has a fairly strong following. I think they stopped building them and thats why they can be had for so cheaply now. Not the best option for more than a small office server, but perfect for a home media server on a buget. And better solutions I found over the last several months cost at least several times as much and more taking it out of my limited buget.

Ok, finally got around to getting the last fileserver up. Its setting up the 4 disk raid 5 array today, started that before I lweft for work this morning.....should be done tonight and be ready for use.
I'll move the rest of my videos to that, and back up the best of those onto the now liberated external USB drives, which will go into the closet to minimize a worst case situation. Just an FYI.....these are Running EMC operating system which is Linux based. Works well, and all the hard stuff is already taken care of, the stuff I was never able to figure out setting a server up from scratch.

Ok, got both the main file servers up and running and data transfered. Both are 8 terrabyte servers, but as they are running RAID 5 their real capacity is much less at 5.1 terrabytes per server. Been cleaning out my external; drives...may have a some more to move.....then I will back up the most important stuff to the USB drives in case of a worst case situation I won't lose nearly as much.
